GFP-L -- Geneseo Food Project

About GFP-L
English (USA)

The Geneseo Food Project was established to explore the ways in which food, environmental sustainability, and social justice are interrelated, and to model an environmentally and socially sustainable food system on campus. The GFP consists of two integrated initiatives: the Geneseo Institute for the Study of Food, Justice, and the Environment, and the Geneseo Community Garden. For further information, see our website: http://foodproject.geneseo.edu

The institute is intended to initiate and maintain a campus- and community-wide interdisciplinary discussion of historical and contemporary issues related to food, social justice, and the environment. The institute's various initiatives will explore these issues as they have unfolded on the local, regional, national, and international levels. To facilitate such a discussion, the institute will sponsor a speaker series, a film/discussion series, mini-conferences, field trips, and service learning opportunities.

The community garden is intended to (1) provide a space where people can learn from each other while working together for a common purpose; (2) provide participants with the opportunity to grow their own produce by employing sustainable agricultural practices; and (3) create an opportunity for hands-on, experiential learning to help gain a deeper understanding of where our food comes from. The GFP has worked out a mutually supportive arrangement with Campus Auxiliary Services (which provides food, et al, for the campus), in which the garden will take a portion of CAS's organic waste to make compost, and CAS will take a portion of the garden's harvest for special "locavore" meals offered in the college's dining facilities.
