Dr. Ysaye Barnwell '67, '68 returns to SUNY Geneseo to lead A Community Sing

Please join Dr. Ysaye Marie Barnwell and SUNY Geneseo in celebrating the 
life and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.
The music selected for Community Sings come from African and 
African-American cultures and is taught in the "oral tradition," so 
musical training is not required.

Barnwell is a musician, composer, arranger, singer, member of Sweet 
Honey in the Rock, and master teacher and choral clinician in African 
American cultural performance. She has B.S. and M.S. degrees in Speech 
Pathology and an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Geneseo.

Barnwell was a very active and involved student, performing with the 
Chamber Singers and as a solo folksinger; tutoring migrant workers; 
joining the Northern Student Movement organization; and working with 
other students and faculty to support the Civil Rights Movement. 
Barnwell was at Geneseo when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated 
in 1968 and sang at Geneseo's first memorial commemoration.

The Community Sing is free and open to the public.
