Dear All,

In association with the Black Students Union and ENGL 458: Major Authors -
M. NourbeSe Philip, there will be a staged reading of Philip's play *Coups
& Calypsos* this week, directed by Christopher Bland.

Thursday 2nd April
5-7pm
The Knight Spot

A military coup sweeps across the twin island state of Trinidad and Tobago.
Elvira, a doctor, and Rohan, an English professor, now separated after a
stormy marriage, are confined to a beach house during a curfew. Their
relationship has foundered on issues of race, identity and politics. The
radio informs the beach house of the danger of the insurrection outside.
Can they survive their own emotional war?

Please circulate widely and encourage students, friends, and colleagues to
attend - Philip's tense, unnerving, insightful play is rarely staged, so
we're lucky to have it on our campus.

Two further dates for your diary:

4/16
Kino Activities will screen *Belle*, British-Ghanaian director Amma
Asante's 2014 period drama-meets-slave narrative film which in part depicts
the Gregson v Gilbert case (the inspiration for Philip's poetry collection
*Zong!*). Thursday April 16th, 7p.m. Free event. Newton 214.

4/28
Philip herself will visit campus and perform her poetry on Tuesday April
28th, 7pm, Doty Recital Hall, to an original musical composition by
Geneseo's own Professor Glenn McClure. Free and open to the public.

Posters for all three events attached!

For more information, contact Dr. Lytton Smith at smithlj at geneseo.

Many thanks to the President’s Office, Residence Life, Macvittie College
Union, the English Department, Black Studies, the Office of Multicultural
Programs and Services, and Black Students Union for supporting these events.
