Little Theatre Newsletter:
Jan. 29- Feb. 4, 2016

Dear
Maria,

The Little Theatre's Black History Month film series returns with classics,
documentaries, and plenty of Spike Lee. I'll have reminders on all the film
in each February newsletter, but for now, I'll give you a rundown of what
we're offering. And a bonus you should know about: All films are only $5
(well, actually one of them will be free, so it's actually a double bonus!).

*The lineup: *

*Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. Chi-Raq.* A number of people have asked me via
social media if The Little would be getting Spike Lee's latest film, so I'm
pumped to be able to answer that with an enthusiastic "yes." The plot?
Well, it's interesting. Here's the synopsis: "The girlfriend (Teyonah
Parris) of a Chicago gang leader (Nick Cannon) persuades other frustrated
women to abstain from sex until their men agree to end the senseless cycle
of violence". In case you're wondering, the movie's official website lists
the pronunciation of the title as: "Shy-RACK."

*Saturday, Feb. 13: at 3 p.m. BaddDDD Sonia Sanchez.* A documentary about
the poet, playwright, teacher, activist, Sonia Sanchez.

*Saturday, Feb. 20 is Spike Lee Saturday!* We'll show 2000's Damon
Wayans-starring satire *Bamboozled *at 3 p.m. and we'll have a *Chi-Raq*
encore at 7 p.m.

*Monday, Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. FREE screening of The Black Panthers: Vanguard
of the Revolution.* We screened this stellar Black Panthers documentary in
October as part of our One Take Doc series. If you missed it then, or just
want to watch it again, you can't do much better than this free screening.

*Saturday, Feb. 27 at 3 p.m.: 3 1/2 Minutes, Ten Bullets.* The plot: "*3 ½
Minutes* reveals what happened during the brief moments when two disparate
lives intersected and were forever altered. On Black Friday 2012, at a
Florida gas station, a white middle-aged man and a black teenager exchanged
angry words over the volume of the music in the boy's car. A gun entered
the exchange and one of them was left dead." Lucy McBath - the mother of
the young man killed that day in 2012 - also appears in *The Armor of Light*
(which we screened as our December One Take Doc).

Hope to see you at the movies!

This drama tells the extraordinary story of Jack, a spirited 5-year-old who
is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson).

Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe,
nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing
games and telling stories. However, they are trapped in a windowless,
10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named "Room."

As Jack's curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma's resilience
reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately
bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing
yet: the real world.

*Room* also stars Jacob Tremblay. It was nominated for four Oscars,
including best picture.

R * 110 min.
ONE SCREENING ONLY

Our MONDO MOVIES series is about the obscure, the offbeat, or as they say
in Italy, the . . . mondo.

These films generally don't get much rotation on the big screen, so we give
patrons a chance to see them at The Little.

Because that's what we're all about.

This week's MONDO Movie is *Immortals**.*

*The plot: *
The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous
Heraklion army are rampaging across Greece in search of the long lost Bow
of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the
Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With
ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their
wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king's mission. As village
after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill)
vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion's raids. When
Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing
visions of the young man's future convince her that he is the key to
stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of
followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the
future of humanity.

"No music. No life." That was the slogan for Tower Records, the chain of

Colin Hanks directs *All Things Must Pass* - a brand-new documentary that
explores the rise and fall of Tower Records, and its legacy forged by its
rebellious founder, Russ Solomon.

After the film, stick around for a discussion about the movie & the death
and resurgence of vinyl culture, share your music shop memories, and ask
questions about the care and feeding of your music collection. WXXI
Classical 91.5 music director and mid-day host Julia Figueras hosts:

Thursday, Feb. 4
6:30 p.m.
Theater 2
*Not Rated * 97 min.*

*The Mask You Live In* is an award-winning documentary about young men
struggling to negotiate America's narrow definition of masculinity. The
film challenges our assumptions about how to raise boys into good men.
If you have a young man in your life that you love, don't miss this chance
to open up communication about what it means to become a man today.

All ticket sales and donations from this event will go directly to the M.K.
Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence, working to create a more peaceful
Rochester.

*IN THE CAFÉ THIS WEEK ↓*

FRIDAY (1/29): Talking Under Water
8 p.m.

Based in Rochester, Talking Under Water consists of conservatory trained
musicians hailing from the Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School
of Music. Their extensive musical training along with the band's unique
instrumentation provide a sublime foundation for the creativity and passion
evident in the songs. The rich, vibrant sound produced is evocative of the
rich Americana/Blues tradition, but with the band's own distinctive spin.

SATURDAY (1/30): Jackson Cavalier and the Fevertones
8 p.m.

Originally forming as a blues rock two-piece in 2012, The Fevertones,
eventually transitioned themselves to alternative folk group.

The group says its goal is to bring "love to your eardrum" and "fever to
your feet."Jackson Cavalier and the Fevertones' most recent EP "On A
Mountain, And The Things Below" was released in July 2015. The collection
of tunes is part of a trilogy loosely inspired by Dante's "Inferno".

MONDAY (2/1): The Uptown Groove
*7 p.m.*

The Uptown Groove trio hails from Rochester, NY, playing acoustic jazz,
classics, rock and soul. The band performs at venues ranging from
restaurants to festivals and from weddings to corporate functions (with the
addition of an optional 3-piece horn section).

*WEDNESDAY *
* (2/3): Rita Collective *
* 7 p.m. *

The Rita Collective is a chamber group that plays original and world music
with a jazz slant. Performances by the Rita Collective include original
compositions written for the group's unusual instrumentation - bass
clarinet, marimba, acoustic bass, and percussion - melodies from the
Middle-East or Africa, re-invented jazz tunes from one of the masters like
Miles, and re-imagined pop tunes from Rage Against the Machine or the
Beatles. The unifying thread for this group is the improvisatory approach
to the music, and the deft playfulness of the musicians that create it.

*THURSDAY (2/4): Steve Grills & The Roadmasters*
*7 p.m.*

For Steve Grills, the Blues has been a life long journey. As a youngster,
he heard the music of Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly and Lightnin' Hopkins
from his father's record collection. Through the Beatles, Steve discovered
Chuck Berry and he has not looked back since. He has searched out the roots
of Rock and Roll, uncovering many great artists who have influenced and
inspired him. Primarily among these are Robert Lockwood Jr., Earl Hooker ,
Freddie King and Albert Collins .
