This Wednesday at 5:30 in Newton 209, there will be an information session
for two study abroad programs in Ghana this summer. SOCL 105, Global
Social Change, and BIOL 344, Biology and Global Health, will be offered
this year from May 19 to June 19. The approach will be largely experiential
and applied learning, and site visits will include schools, hospitals,
businesses, farms, markets, national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and
community development projects. Embedded in the course is a research
experience working with neglected tropical diseases in a marginalized
community on the outskirts of the capital city in conjunction with a public
health research laboratory at the University of Ghana. Total enrollment
across both classes will be capped at 16-18. Early application is strongly
encouraged.

More information, including cost, is available on the Geneseo Study Abroad
web site, or from Susan Bandoni Muench (bandoni at geneseo.edu) or Jo Kirk (
kirk at geneseo.edu). If cost is the only potential barrier, please consult
the Study Abroad Office, where they can help you figure out your financial
options. In terms of cost, this program offers good value, in that the
program fee includes accommodation, transportation, all site visits
(including a safari!) and other class activities, and also many meals.
Additional purchases, whether food, souvenirs or gifts, are economical, due
to the low cost of living in Ghana relative to the US.
