> As one of the first African American Studies program in the country, founded in 1969, our goal is to give students a broad based perspective on the African American experience that will serve for more advanced study. In addition to preparing students for more advanced graduate work, completing a one year Master’s in African American Studies can augment a professional degree, expand future employment options, as well as be a stepping stone to working in the public sector.
>
> · Our program approaches the study of African-descended peoples from a multi-regional perspective. We compare and contrast the experiences of African–descended people in the United States with those who have similar histories elsewhere in the world, such as in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Europe.
>
> · Our program is multi-disciplinary with scholars from History, Political Science, Sociology, English, Economics, Ethnomusicology, and Art History. Additionally, the majority of our courses are cross-listed with other departments. This allows students the opportunity to pursue special interests within the broader framework offered by the core requirements of the program which includes a language requirement, two required courses, six electives, and two major papers, one of which is defended orally.
>
> · As a major research institution, Boston University offers students in our program a wide range of academic resources. More broadly, Boston is home to many colleges and universities that offer additional opportunities for study and discourse. Thus, our students are immersed in an environment that is intellectually stimulating and filled with a myriad of academic choices.
>
> · The African American Studies Program remains modest in size so our students receive frequent, individual attention and advice from faculty. In addition, students are given opportunities to participate in many of the program events, such as lectures, symposia, and alumni events.
