Little Theatre Newsletter:
Feb. 1-7, 2019

Dear
*Maria**,*

January is a bit of a jerk month. It's FRIGID enough for me to use all
caps, and it's generally a letdown following the holiday bonanza of
December. February, on the other hand, is much better. Yeah, it's still
coated in snow, but it has a bit more magic to it, a bit more romance.
Here at The Little, February always gives me some things to look forward to
as well. The Academy Awards, for one, and also Black History Month. Two
years ago, we debuted The Black Cinema Series with the Rochester
Association of Black Journalists (RABJ). It's a monthly celebration of both
documentary and narrative expressions in black cinema. One of the main
ideas was that it's essential to show these films *every* month of the
year, and not just during Black History Month.
Now, it's time for me to tell you about the February programming. The Black
Cinema Series has two fantastic offerings this month. Here are the details
you need:

*Don't Be Nice6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15Runtime: 95 minutes; panel
discussion to follow$9 general admission tickets now on sale*
The upstart Bowery Slam Poetry Team, made up of five African-American,
Afro-Hispanic and queer poets in their 20s, prepares for the national
championships. Mentored by a demanding coach who encourages them to push
past their personal boundaries and write from a place of vulnerability,
pain and honesty, the poets break down, break through and compose their
best work ever.

Timely and difficult, their spoken word slays-but will these soul-searching
pieces about police violence and the whitewashing of black culture be able
to compete against choreographed crowd-pleasers for the title? Will opting
to make a statement instead of a show spell their defeat?

*'63 Boycott6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27Runtime: 30 minutes; panel
discussion to follow Free screening*On October 22, 1963, more than 250,000
students boycotted the Chicago Public Schools to protest racial
segregation. Many marched through the city calling for the resignation of
School Superintendent Benjamin Willis, who placed trailers, dubbed 'Willis
Wagons,' on playgrounds and parking lots of overcrowded black schools
rather than let them enroll in nearby white schools.
Blending unseen 16mm footage of the with the participants' reflections
today, *'63 Boycott* connects the forgotten story of one of the largest
northern civil rights demonstrations to contemporary issues around race,
education, school closings, and youth activism.

We hope to see you at the screenings!
*A Printable Schedule For You*

Here's your weekly schedule. I switched up the format a bit. This is not as
visibly pleasing as the one I've had the past few weeks, but may be easier
to read. Let me know what you prefer (I may end up sending out both, if
possible).

Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali (*Moonlight, Hidden Figures, The 4400*)
and Academy Award nominee Viggo Mortensen (*Eastern Promises, The Lord of
the Rings* trilogy) star in this film inspired by a true friendship that
transcended race, class and the 1962 Mason-Dixon line.
When Tony Lip (Mortensen), a bouncer from an Italian-American neighborhood
in the Bronx, is hired to drive Dr. Don Shirley (Ali), a world-class
pianist, on a concert tour from Manhattan to the Deep South, they must rely
on "The Green Book" to guide them to the few establishments that were then
safe for African-Americans. Confronted with racism, danger as well as
unexpected humanity and humor-they are forced to set aside differences to
survive and thrive on the journey of a lifetime.
Directed by Peter Farrelly.

mercurial temper.
When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to
Sarah. Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at a
return to her aristocratic roots. As the politics of war become quite time

   Joni 75: A Birthday Celebration (2/7 only)

Theater 1
Not Rated * 120 min.
6:30 p.m.
Thursday, Feb. 7
$10

Join an incredible array of singers and musicians who came together to
honor one of the world's most remarkable artists, Joni Mitchell, on her
75th birthday. The hand-selected group of peers and protégés including
Brandi Carlile, Glen Hansard, Emmylou Harris, Norah Jones, Chaka Khan,
Diana Krall, Kris Kristofferson, Los Lobos with La Marisoul, Cesar Castro &
Xochi Flores, Graham Nash, Seal, James Taylor, Rufus Wainwright and more
paid tribute to the iconic artist, performing songs from all stages of
Mitchell's life and career, across her entire catalog of 19 studio albums.
Captured over two nights in November 2018 by The Music Center at the
Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, the entire concert, along with
special behind-the-scenes interviews with the artists, will be shown in
movie theaters for one night, Thursday, February 7.
As an artist, Mitchell performed with an emotional honesty that resonated
with a wide audience. The unifying effect of Mitchell's music rings out
with a closing group singalong to "Big Yellow Taxi" during which Mitchell
herself is captured on camera. But the biggest moment, the most emotional,
is saved for the end when the celebrated singer takes to the stage to blow
out candles on a cake after the crowd serenades her with "Happy Birthday."

8 p.m.

Piano player Sarah Eide will join The Brothers Blue on First Friday for
some positively foot-stomping tunes.

For Steve Grills, the Blues has been a life long journey. As a youngster,
he heard the music of Big Bill Broonzy, Leadbelly and Lightnin' Hopkins
from his father's record collection. Through the Beatles, Steve discovered
Chuck Berry and he has not looked back since. He has searched out the roots
of Rock and Roll, uncovering many great artists who have influenced and
inspired him.

dancers and diners around Western New York. Violinist Evan Meccarello and
guitarist Seth Sealfon bring their interpretations of classic tunes, from
Carlos Gardel in the 1920s through Astor Piazzolla's tango nuevo in the
1960s. Previously resident musicians at the Tango Cafe, Uptown Tango
travels to performances at regional tango clubs and collaborates with
like-minded musicians. The music ranges from fiery flair to soulful
tenderness, always with an Argentinian accent.

*WEDNESDAY (2/6): Katie Preston and Friends*

*7 p.m.*
Pianist, singer, guitarist, and producer Katie Preston is in Pleistocene,
The Prestons, Ben Morey and the Eyes (with whom she co-produced the debut
album Mount Doom), and the new supergroup the Vinaigrettes. She's also a
sought-after solo performer in a variety of styles of music. She also leads

*THURSDAY (2/7): Big Blue House*
*7 p.m.*

Big Blue House is a trio of seasoned musicians with experience in a variety
of genres. They merge styles and voices into a unique amalgamation of folk,
rock, blues, jazz and reggae.
According to its website, the group offers a "blend of voices, acoustic
rhythm and lead guitar, stand-up bass, and occasional mandolin, banjo and
resonator guitar." They often add percussion and a random horn to fill up
the house, as well. Big Blue House songs run a broad scope of time and
genres but keep a consistency of musicality, lyricism, imagery and
tastefulness.
The group lists The Allman Brothers, Miles Davis, Neil Young, The Beatles,
and Herbie Hancock among its influences.
