Rochester Democrat and Chronicle USA TODAY NETWORK

The Little Theatre's Black Cinema Series returns Thursday with the film
"Ailey," directed by Jamila Wignot.

A panel discussion will occur after the film's screening at 6:30 p.m.

The film examines the life of dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey whose
search for the truth in movement resulted in lasting choreography that
centers on the Black American experience.

The story is told through Ailey's own words, using archival footage and
interviews with those who personally knew him.

Ailey was nominated for the grand jury prize at the 2021 Sundance Film
Festival.

The Rochester Association of Black Journalists has partnered with The
Little Theatre to present the Black Cinema Series, which screens narrative
and nonfiction films about Black life.

The series features contemporary independent films and highlights Black
perspectives and filmmakers. Post-film panel discussions include community
experts and filmmakers.

"Ailey" opened Friday at The Little Theatre, but the post-film panel
discussion will only occur following the Thursday screening.

Post-film panelists include:

? Garth Fagan: Founder & Artistic Director, Garth Fagan Dance

? Norwood "PJ" Pennewell: Garth Fagan Dance

? Ashley Campbell: Culture and Social Impact Strategist

? Thomas Warfield: Director of Dance, National Technical Institute for the
Deaf (NTID)

? Richard J. McCollough: panel moderator; RABJ Black Cinema Series Chairman
The Little Theatre requires masks to enter the building, regardless of
vaccination status, and asks that guests be prepared to have masks covering
their nose and mouth at all times, except when eating or drinking while
seated.

Tickets are available at thelittle.org/bcsailey in advance or at the door.

"Ailey" was nominated for the grand jury prize at the 2021 Sundance Film
Festival. PROVIDED MOVIE POSTER
