In an effort to increase its population, Romania declared abortion illegal
in 1966. It is estimated that by the end of the Ceaucescu regime in 1989,
over 500,000 women had died as a result of botched abortions. Set in
1987, this intense and suspenseful masterpiece follows Otilia as she helps
her roommate Gabita arrange for an abortion. If caught, they could face
jail… or worse. The 2007 winner of the Palm d'Or at the Cannes Film
Festival.
