What about the personnel costs of scanning? Might be cheaper just to send the book, especially for smaller libraries.

This is a pet peeve of mine. I even put (Please send chapter only. Thanks) on the request and I still get some libraries that will send the book. This costs both them and us unnecessary shipping cost. Sometimes a patron can’t wait for the book to arrive so they request a chapter instead. During the summer seniors who are working on their theses request chapters hoping they will have electronic access to them once they received. The senior are not on campus so they don’t have access to the book.
Now off my soap box…
This is how I handle it in ILLiad. I leave it as a copy request and use the check-in scan now icon to scan and send the chapter to the patron. The request is now in the status “Delivered to Web.” This will update the request to received in WorldCat Resource Sharing. I update the request in WCRS to returned and create a shipping label with the lenders address in ILLiad. I usually do this when I am processing other returns and the merged document is available to edit. Yes, this is a pain, but it is the best way I found to resolve this problem.
I really wish that libraries would send the chapter only if that is what is requested. Otherwise, please say no to the request and let another library fill it.

How do folks deal with article requests received as loans in ILLiad? We had a book chapter request and the lending library sent the whole book. This created some confusion in ILLiad as far as printing labels.
We are wondering if we should change the “article” request to “loan” or if it would make more sense to leave as “article”. It seems as though it would have to be changed to “loan”, since the lender has assigned a due date, etc.
Thanks,
