Hi Lexie,
First, the template is still a .doc, not a .docx. You might try saving your existing file as a .doc before linking it to the data file. Next, are you in 8.0.x or 8.1.x or 8.2? There are some differences between versions when it comes to the default locations for some of the files. 8.1.x on up will put the .xls file in c:\Program Files\ILLiad\print\, regardless of where you've set it to look for your print templates. (at least that's been my experience!) Are you keeping your merge templates on your local hard drive or on a networked drive? It sounds simplistic, but it's possible you're putting the wrong file in the wrong directory.
Until you've actually run a label print job, there is no .xls file for the merge document to link to, so yes, you must run at least one test print first. Just make sure you check the Prompt and Edit boxes so you'll be given the option to open the merge template and view the results before sending it to the printer. If the merge doc isn't linking automatically, you'll have to set up the link after running the print job. The file you're looking for is returns.xls. In Word, go to the Mailings ribbon, click Select Recipients > Use Existing List, and navigate to returns.xls. Once you've selected it, link to the print queue, rather than the legacy queue. There are some changes in 8.1 field names, beyond the changes in 8.0, so you'll likely still have to edit your field names. The field names on the data file are now in the form tablename_fieldname, e.g., Transactions_TransactionNumber. If you've got a template that worked for you before, you can link to the legacy queue and use the old mergefield names, at least for the moment. If that works, then you can start working on setting it up with the corresponding new field names. I'm attaching the original BorrowingLoanLabels.doc that I have, which is already set up to use the print queue.

Lexie, I can't help with your questions. We had saved all the templates and only edited copies, just in case. Can you contact Atlas to get the original file? Or, I've attached our file (which has a .doc extension, so may not work for you), just in case.
We had very good luck contacting the OCLC Help line at 1-800-848-5800. they really helped us work through some difficult problems like this.
Good luck! / Leslie

Thanks for your reply. I saw the printing suggestion on the Atlas website, so I tried printing the first 3 sheets of the XLS document yesterday, but it didn't do anything to help the template issues that I can tell. I don't know if it's necessary to print the whole document (or if at all) and since it's a 66 page document, I was hoping to avoid printing the whole thing if it isn't necessary. I just printed the BorrowingLoanLabel.docx document, but after closing and re-entering, it still doesn't allow me to edit any fields. I've been using the Borrowing Loan Label, but I've just been customizing the read only file to how our labels look each time I do a new print session, so I know it's been printed before now.
Is there a way to find the original BorrowingLoanLable.docx to download somewhere? I'm wondering if something went wrong when I saved the original files the first time and I need to find a new file to download again.
Thanks again for any help!

Have you tried printing one of the documents first? The xls file needs to be created, and my understanding is that the only way to do that is to print a document which then creates the xls file. / Leslie
